Tournament overview
IEM Cologne Major 2026 brought a Counter-Strike Major back to Cologne for the first time in ten years. From June 2 to 21, 32 teams played through three stages and the playoffs for a $1.25 million prize pool. Eight teams reached the LANXESS Arena: FURIA, Team Spirit, Team Vitality, Aurora Gaming, Team Falcons, BetBoom, 9z and G2 Esports.
The tournament produced several memorable stories. BetBoom became only the second team in Major history to advance through every stage and still reach the playoffs, while 9z made the first Major playoff appearance in the organization’s history. Earlier in the event, BIG recovered from a 0-12 deficit against NRG on Mirage by winning 16 consecutive rounds. In the playoffs, Falcons eliminated Vitality 2-1 and then survived a tense semifinal against defending Cologne champions Team Spirit.
The Grand Final matched Team Falcons against FURIA. Falcons controlled the series from the opening map and won Mirage, Anubis and Inferno by the same 13-8 score to complete a 3-0 sweep. The victory gave Falcons their first Major title and finally delivered Nikola “NiKo” Kovač the Major trophy he had pursued for more than a decade. Ilya “m0NESY” Osipov received the tournament MVP award. The event also set a Counter-Strike viewership record with more than 100 million hours watched and a peak audience above 2.75 million.
